A Strong Blend
Marlton’s robust business community consists of a variety of companies from many different industries, all of whom benefit from the town’s key advantages.

by Matt Cosentino
Burlington County native and longtime real estate agent Chris Benstead refers to Marlton as “a melting pot,” and the description is just as fitting for the business community as it is for the town’s residents. The most populated municipality in the county is also home to more than 2,000 businesses, including upscale restaurants, specialized medical practices, accountants, financial advisors, large-scale shopping centers, office parks and much more.

In addition to its prime location in the heart of South Jersey and easy access to major highways, Marlton boasts a supportive local government and a family-friendly environment.

South Jersey Biz spoke to three professionals to learn more about its appeal: Benstead is part of the Sid Benstead Team at Berkshire Hathaway, a group of agents offering commercial, residential, sales and leasing services; William C. Smitheman Jr., CPA/CFE, is a partner at Baratz & Associates, PA, one of the region’s leading accounting and consulting firms; and Dr. Noah Lindenberg is the founder of a unique, private practice known as Lindenberg Cancer & Hematology Center.

Why is Marlton a place that a lot of companies want to call home?
Chris Benstead: “Marlton has become a hub for commerce due to the significant growth of Routes 70 and 73. With its proximity to Center City and the South Jersey area, it continues to be a draw for companies wanting to be in a centralized area.”

What makes Marlton the ideal spot to be located for a practice of your size and scope?
Dr. Noah Lindenberg: “We believe Marlton is an ideal location because it allows us to provide highly specialized care while remaining deeply connected to the community we serve. Marlton’s central location in Burlington County, within Evesham Township, gives us the opportunity to care for a broad and growing patient population across South Jersey. At the same time, it maintains a close-knit, community-oriented feel that aligns with our commitment to personalized, patient-centered care.

“Accessibility is another key factor. With convenient access to major roadways like Routes 70 and 73, as well as I-295 and the New Jersey Turnpike, our patients can easily travel to our office from surrounding areas and even nearby Pennsylvania. Being just outside of Philadelphia also allows patients to receive high-quality oncology and hematology care without the added stress of navigating a large city.

“Marlton is also a strong, stable community with a focus on health and wellness, which supports the kind of ongoing, comprehensive care our patients need. Additionally, its reputation as a safe, family-friendly area with an excellent quality of life creates a supportive environment not only for our patients and their families, but also for our physicians and staff.”

How does local government support the needs of the business community?
William Smitheman Jr: “The local government created the Evesham Economic Advisory Council, with its members, local business owners, being appointed by the mayor. The advisory council also helps share information about community development initiatives, identifies opportunities for local policy, assists in the preparation of grant and funding applications, and coordinates with any federal, state or local agencies seeking to support local business and commerce. In addition the township has a liaison that regularly attends the Marlton Business Association meetings.”

How is the commercial market in Marlton right now?
CB: “We are seeing a return to the small-office asset. I recently signed four new leases in Marlton along Route 73 for those types of services. The small-office space is coming back. For a long time, the office sector had dipped due to working remotely. But there is a resurgence in the Marlton area for small-office use by therapists, doctors and dentists. Marlon commercial space is stronger than ever, and the Sid Benstead Team is here to assist.”

What are some of the local causes you like to support, namely with ties to Marlton?
NL: “We actively contribute to youth sports programs, including local softball and other recreational leagues, helping provide opportunities for kids to stay active, build teamwork and grow their confidence. In addition, we regularly support school-affiliated fundraisers and community initiatives, partnering with local families and educators to give back in meaningful ways. A cause especially close to our hearts is our ongoing support of the American Heart Association, particularly through participation in fundraising challenges organized by local elementary schools. … Each October, we are also honored to support breast cancer fundraising efforts in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”

WS: “I serve as president of the Evesham Education Foundation, which has invested more than $1 million into our schools since 1995 to support academic readiness, mental health services, gifted education, technology and enrichment programs for thousands of local students. … I’ve [also] been involved with the Marlton Business Association for about 10 years and recently served on the board. The Association brings together local business owners to promote and support local business through many initiatives, including networking events, dedicated women’s programs and volunteer opportunities.”
