Virtua Health experienced a true baby boom in 2021, setting a new record for the health system by safely welcoming 9,109 babies—more than a 7% increase over 2020’s births. Virtua continues to introduce new options for birthing through its Midwifery Birth and Wellness Center, the only freestanding birth center in South Jersey.
In other Virtua milestones, it is New Jersey’s first health system to offer the BEAR Implant, which treats anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears and is considered the first medical advancement that helps the body heal its own torn ACL. Sean McMillan, DO, sports medicine surgeon at Virtua Orthopedics & Spine, is the first surgeon in the state to have performed the procedure.
The Department of Pathology at Cooper University Health Care has added new diagnostic technology to its resources: the Genexus Integrated Sequencer, capable of fully automated, next-generation rapid gene sequencing. Cooper is among the few New Jersey health systems capable of on-site genetic sequencing, which allows for both identification and better understanding of the genetic profiles for viruses, tumors and other specimens, including COVID-19 variants.
Cooper is also the first hospital in the state to use the Siemens SOMATOM. It is the newest generation of portable CT scanners, allowing medically critical patients to receive a scan without being moved or leaving their beds.
Early last year, the state health department made it possible for community hospitals to provide percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), a nonsurgical procedure that treats coronary arteries that have narrowed due to disease. Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill recently announced that it has been awarded a license to practice PCI procedures, which will allow the organization to elevate its cardiac care abilities.
