TAKE 5: Choosing the right attorney for your business

by Editorial Staff--South Jersey Biz

Gary W. Boguski Esq., president of the Camden County Bar Association, says hiring a lawyer today is not unlike dating. While the Internet is a tremendous source of info, the hiring of a lawyer, like finding a mate, still comes down to good old-fashioned communication.

1. Avail yourself of all Internet sources for lawyers who are qualified to handle your needs. There are a number of sites that provide relevant reviews. However, the Internet is only the start.

2. Referrals are tried and true. Check with business associates, friends, neighbors and the bar association.

3. Request a consultation. Make sure that you have a clear understanding as to any fees to be charged before committing to a meeting, and that you have articulated exactly what your needs are so your initial meetings are efficient.

4. Ask the proper questions. Make sure that he or she has experience compatible with your needs. It is important to find out who in the firm will be handling your file and, for each lawyer who may touch it, his or her experience.

5. Never hire until there’s a clear understanding of expectations, both yours and the firm’s. Trust your gut to tell you whether the lawyer is a fit. If not, keep looking. Remember, you are the boss and your lawyer works for you.
