With more than 30 years’ experience in leadership mentoring, business coaching and consulting, Kathleen Cashman-Walter knows how to help lead organizations forward, especially in times of chaos that necessitate adaptability and quick decisions.
And she knows that taking a holistic approach is how to best help managers become leaders, encouraging them to not only realize their own capabilities, but also thoroughly assessing their organizations’ teams, strategies, growth and development, structure, products and services, and even competition.
“My role as a consultant is to work with an organization to identify, grow and help leaders think throughout their organization, big or small. I just hold the space and ask those questions that are hard to answer—because they already have the answers,” she begins. “If you don’t consider your organization, your processes and, most of all, your people, you end up managing versus leading. Management is getting things done … the leadership end is working with your team so everyone is coming with you to get to the end result.”
Cashman, who also created and teaches Communication & Leadership, for Professional Science Masters Program at Rutgers University, is keyed into what it takes to navigate an organization through an unpredictable landscape, much like today’s reality.
“It’s very easy to lead in good times; it is very difficult to lead when things are not so good, and the difficulty is the people part, because people respond differently to the challenges going on,” she explains. “It’s very important to think before you act, and the way that the world is unfolding today, you might not have a lot of time to do the thinking—but you need to find the time, as a leader.”
