Early last month, The Coriell Institute for Medical Research broke ground on its new life sciences campus in Camden, which will both include the NJ Coriell Labs Innovation Center—one of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority-designated strategic innovation centers—and become the Coriell Institute’s new headquarters, research center and biorepository. The site will also include six National Institutes of Health biobanks.

Cooper University Health Care announced last month that its MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper is among South Jersey’s first health systems to offer patients living with prostate cancer treatment via robotic high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) procedures, an innovation that uses precisely targeted ultrasound waves to eliminate diseased prostate tissue without impacting the healthy surrounding tissue. Last month also marked Cooper’s fourth consecutive AFRI(Crit) mission, where its Division of Critical Care Medicine physicians lead a multidisciplinary team in delivering training missions and advanced medical education to providers working at East African health care institutions.

Inspira Health announced on Oct. 8 that Inspira Medical Centers Mullica Hill, Vineland and Elmer have earned the American College of Cardiology’s (ACC’s) heart failure accreditation in recognition of its cardiac care and consistent improvements in outcomes for heart-failure patients. Inspira’s Cardiac Cath Labs have also achieved the ACC Cardiac Cath Lab accreditation for its dedication to safe, efficient and patient-centered cardiac catheterization procedures.

At the end of last month, AtlantiCare announced a host of recognitions it has received from Healthgrades, a popular site that annually evaluates patient outcomes by assessing risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for over 30 common conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 nationwide hospitals. The South Jersey health care organization earned 17 clinical achievements, in addition to being named among Healthgrades America’s 50 best hospitals for outpatient joint replacement and orthopedic surgery. The system notes that its distinctions place it in America’s 100 best for cardiac interventional procedures and cardiac care, and in New Jersey’s top five for overall cardiac services.

The $4 million state grant that Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital received last month will go toward developing a 4,000-square-foot EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment, and Healing) facility, which is intended to provide a calmer environment for patients experiencing a mental health crisis. The facility is expected to be completed in 2027, and the hospital system reports that it will be the first in South Jersey to offer patients this kind of space.
