Breakdown

The Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) recently rolled out its first bridge toll increase in 13 years.

What Happened: In July, the DRPA commissioner board approved raising tolls on its four bridges connecting South Jersey and Philadelphia; starting Sept. 1, that dollar increase went into effect.

What It Means: The Ben Franklin, Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry and Betsy Ross bridges now cost $6 to cross, instead of the previous $5. The DRPA Patco fares, however, will remain unchanged, as will the fees to cross bridges operated by other transportation authorities.

What’s Next: According to a press release DRPA issued in mid-July, the toll hike “is essential due to the challenges of enhancing safety and security and maintaining aging infrastructure.” The release goes on to note that DRPA “aims to provide the necessary financial resources for long-term capital projects, operational needs and infrastructure upkeep,” as that increased revenue stream is also intended to support not only the port authority’s fiscal stability but also its future ability to secure project funds at favorable rates, as DRPA has a number of approved capital projects focusing on its bridges throughout the next five years.
