A lot of money rides on the weather : Major events might be cancelled or poorly attended ; some businesses are seasonal so their annual profits rise or fall with the weather during their operational period ; many commodity prices rise and fall with changes in weather . And , of course , extreme weather events can destroy millions of dollars of property . That's why so many resources are put into forecasting the weather — some of the most sophisticated models and tools have been developed for improved weather predictions . Unlike most other fields , meteo - rology professionals even share many sources , information and ideas . Yet , weather forecasting still isn't very accurate . Most meteorologists still say the best we can hope for is a reasonably accurate forecast for the next three days . Anything beyond that depends on many variables , and we still don't know how differ - ent factors influence the variables . That makes weather and the factors underlying it very dynamic , complex and largely unpredictable . If weather forecasts aren't highly reliable despite all the resources devoted to them , market and economic forecasts aren't going to be any more accurate . That's why we don't pay attention to predictions ( except for their entertainment value ) and , instead , offer financial advice that has weathered all kinds of economic conditions : Always plan and prepare for the worst but keep hoping for the best .
